Rothenburg, Germany 05/2009

Rothenburg is one of our favorite places to visit. The town survived through the ages because it was not at an important cross roads, or river, or on a trade route. So the city is for the most part still intact with the wall all the way around and old buildings etc. This place is so cool we love it! The city streets and houses have been built right around this ancient well from the 16th century!

The town was saved in 1631 when the French Catholic Armies of the 30 years war came through and spared the town because the mayor succeeded in the General's challenge to drink a tankard of wine in one go. The tankard was approximately one gallon in size!
The facade of this building has the sculptures of the 7 deadly sins and 7 virtues.
Kicking back for a little lunch with Grandpa!
Rothenburg has a very splendid Christmas Market, hence Christmas in July!
The church in the center of town is absolutely beautiful! The stain glass the gold leaf alters and it's really old to our standards.
If you were an important Lord or Baron you could sit in these seats during the middle ages. So were pretending to be pompous and very wealthy...I know it doesn't go over very well. hee hee

The next three pics are of the most admired wood carvings in all of Germany, over 500 years old the alter of the Holy Blood stands about 35 ft tall and has some of the coolest detailed carvings of the last supper you'll ever find.

We're atop the city town hall tower, over 200 feet tall and Grandpa climbed it with us! What a site to see unbelievable!

No kidding it was very tight and steep with creeky old stairs!
See I told ya so!!!

Rothenburg also has a museum of criminality. Nothing like sitting on a chair of nails.
These masks were locked onto your head if you were caught doing something wicked. Everyone made fun of you and life was not so easy while this thing was strapped to your head!
If you were in this torture cage you usually didn't survive were told.
An honest to gosh Iron Maiden...with spike inside the whole shooting match!

We all got off pretty easy.
