Garmish, Germany 01/25-01/28/09

We went on a ski trip to Garmish in the Bavarian Alps in southern Germany. You ride a tram to the top of the 'Zugspitze'. Which is the highest point in Germany. Then you ride a tram down into a giant bowl where there is several lifts and ski runs. The 'bowl' is a wide open area, nothing like the skiing in Utah mountains. I was anxious to find out if Utah did indeed have the 'greatest snow on earth'. Utah does! (so far). Steve and I watched the boys ski and enjoyed the scenery. From the Zugspitze you can look out to Austria, Switzerland and of course Germany.

We went with friends from the Ward, the Clark's.

Lunch at the Zugspitze logde.
Scenery looking out towards Austria. The ski runs below.
Inside this 'bowl' there is a snow cave hotel type thing. Yes you can stay in it. This is the inside of it. They have snow sculptures inside.
A mammoth carved in the snow cave wall.
Lodge in the 'bowl'.

Scenery looking out toward the Swiss Alps.
Looking out towards Berlin. They say you can see Berlin on a clear day.

After a day of sking, taking the train to the bottom. It mostly goes thru the mountain.

Steve, particularly enjoyed the art on the homes and buildings.

Day 2 of sking, Steve and I went window shopping in a small town call Mittenwald. We discovered a yummy dessert call germknodle. It's like a giant dumpling with plum sauce jam type stuff in the middle and covered in a vanilla sauce. It was yummy!
